Pink and Blue-I Love You!

I have mentioned before we are buying a house and I’ve been giving some thought to my daughter’s big girl room. You may remember the room design in an earlier post here. We won’t be updating the nursery until the end of year, but I’m a planner. I like to muse over things for a while and figure out different ways to deconstruct or redesign them. Below are just a few things I’d like to see in her pink and navy room. Of course…I’ve only just begun to scratch the surface.

I want a tole chandelier and plan to paint it a bold pink color. I found these two at
www.greatchandelier.com and they aren’t true tole but close. Truthfully I am hoping to score an eBay bargain but currently nothing listed is striking my fancy.

I’d also love to have one of these dress forms just because they are so fun! Let’s hope www.PBTeen.com keeps them in stock through the end of the year. I am also drawn to this oversized pom pom fringe pillow (white) and it's eco-friendly.

And last, one of my current obsessions is Janet Hill Studio. She’s a Canadian Etsy.com artist that captures everyday settings and beautiful accessories and transforms them into gorgeous oil paintings. I currently own three of her pieces that I plan to hang in my studio. She also reproduces her work into inexpensive and beautiful prints for framing. I love the idea of a few in my daughter’s room. Maybe these…

And if my husband has any say in the matter, there will be one of these. Of course I have veto power.

Eco Chic

Here’s a little Friday feast for the eyes. Check out this stunning fuscia, orange and aqua eco friendly room designed for HGTV’s Green Home 2009. The overall size of the room is a bit on the small side, but this design packs a lot of punch for a petite room. Just about all the furnishings and fabrics are environmentally friendly which just goes to show you can help product mother earth and still have high style. Top Ten Cutest Chairs for Kids

Elle Décor’s April ’09 issue features their top ten picks for the most stylish choices in children’s seating. I especially love the Lou Lou Ghost Chair by Philippe Starck but a more economically option is the Leksvik chair by Ikea. Click on the image above to enlarge (my apologies for the awful scan, uploading this image was brutal!).

All of the above are sure to add a touch of sophistication to your child’s room, but a few of these are definite budget busters. Below are some more affordable options left off the list but sure to bring a sense of style to their room.

1 2 3

4 5 6

7 8 9
Chairs 7 and 8 are the most affordable of group and from Ikea and chair 9 is a modern eco friendly option. With the exception of the two Ikea chairs all are available at http://www.allchildrensfurniture.com/.

Design Tip: Check out this cute idea on how to customize the chairs by Pottery Barn Kids. You can easily add their name to any of the wood or plastic chair options, just visit any online custom decal store for design ideas.

Art for the Mod Tot

A reader sent me a link to this cool custom canvas art company. I was overwhelmed by the awesome selection of clean modern kid’s art. Each design allows you to place your child’s name in the art and there are scores of categories to choose from. Best of all they are 100% green. All art is printed with water based dyes on 100% cotton canvases. Above are just a few of my favorites, to preview them all visit http://canvasgrafix.com. Thanks Kelly!

Design Tip: At what height do you properly hang art? The bottom of the frame or canvas should be 6-8 inches above a sofa back or 8-10 inches above other furniture. Any higher and it becomes disconnected from the furniture and makes the room look out of balance. If you’re hanging a picture on a blank wall with no furniture center the picture sixty inches up from the floor.
