Chic on the Cheap

A huge trend in kid’s furniture that’s been around for a while is painted case goods. When I was pregnant I bought a baby décor book for decorating ideas and that’s when I found the dark pink and green dressers above. I loved the bold statement and touch of whimsy the pieces made in a kids room.

When I contacted the designer of one of these pieces they quoted me $2500 to make a custom dresser. Ouch! That’s a lot of money and I couldn’t bring myself to thrown down that kind of cash for a changing table/dresser. So one Saturday morning I dragged my pregnant self and husband to a few antique stores and found the light pink dresser above on the right. Of course it was not light pink when I found it, but it was a gorgeous solid oak antique with the Empire style I was looking for. I was so excited to find it on my first scouting trip I started dancing a pregnant happy dance right there. The curved round feet and carved scrolling-it was perfect! Some primer, paint, decorative knobs and $500 later I had my perfect showpiece for my daughter’s room and saved myself $2000!

What is great about this look is it’s easy to recreate on your own and for cheap. If you’re decorating your nursery, want to replace the changing table with a larger dresser or considering painted furniture, I urge you to explore this chic look on the cheap. Below are a few more resources and ideas to create your own painted dresser. Also don’t forget your unfinished furniture stores and to dicker down the price at antiques stores. They Take a Lickin’ and Keep on Stickn’

Attention all parents, these little labels are a must have! Kelley Hughes designs these permanent, waterproof and even dishwasher safe necessities. Each design measures a perfect 2.75” square of solid stickiness.

I first learned about these from my super savvy sister-in-law who shared these little gems with me as I was preparing my newborn for daycare. I slapped these stickers on everything from bottles, bowls and sippy cups to wipey dispensers and lunchboxes. If your child goes to daycare, mother’s morning out or school labeling everything comes with the territory and now you can do it in style. At $16 for a set of 18 or $28 for 36 they are worth the investment. A set of 36 will last you at least a couple of years. Check out the where to shop for more designs.

Worthy of Our Attention

If you are going to follow my blog you’ll notice on occasion I like to highlight gorgeous accoutrements that are worthy of our attention. I stumbled across these cake toppers when searching for birthday cake ideas for my daughter’s birthday. I simply adore these toppers! The stunningly gorgeous detail in the crystals and this modern approach to an old tradition is irresistible.

Since I’ve been married for some time now it’s too late to tuck this away for a wedding idea, but I love the thought of having one for my daughter’s sweet sixteen. Let’s all take a moment to enjoy them.

When Pink and Blue Live Happily Ever After

I am constantly clipping magazines and books with rooms that speak to me. Most of them have nothing to do with children’s décor, but I love transforming the original into something oh so chic for kids. This room is a perfect example of what I mean.

I clipped these pages from an April 08 In Style magazine article and have been archiving them to one day create my dream “big girl room” for my daughter. This room was designed by Mary McDonald an L.A. interior designer. Her website http://www.marymcdonaldinc.com/ features more of her amazing work. Here is what I would do to transform this room into my daughter’s sanctuary. Click on the picture below to enlarge.

Blogs baby, they’re all the rage!

Welcome to the inaugural One Haute Kid blog for Jacquelyn Reese Baby and Kids. For those of you who don’t know me, I design custom baby and children’s beddings under Jacquelyn Reese. I am a mother to a beautiful two year old daughter and a wife to an amazing husband. Although I never properly studied design, it’s in my blood. I have an architect father, seamstresses for grandmothers and a mother who thankfully forced me to sit by her side at the sewing machine as she was fabricating my latest birthday attire.

My blog One Haute Kid will feature the latest news in children’s décor and design, my friends, family, designs and what inspires me. If you have kids, don’t know if you want kids, have nieces and nephews who are all the kids you need in your life or are squirreling away ideas for the future, I hope my findings will inspire you to rethink a room, nook or little lost space in your home and give it a sense of style. If you like what you see, pass it along to a friend or loved one, visit my web site www.JacquelynReese.com or contact me directly at vwalton@jacquelynreese.com.
